Major Project Milestones

The Taweelah B Independent Water and Power Project (“Project”) is located at the existing Taweelah Complex, which is 80 km east north east of Abu Dhabi city. The Project, signed-of in 2005, was the fifth and the largest IWPP developed in Abu Dhabi under the Government of Abu Dhabi’s highly successful programme for the privatisation of the water and power sector.

Taweelah B

The Project comprises principally:

  • the acquisition, ownership, operation and maintenance of the existing Taweelah B and Initial B power and desalination plants together with certain associated assets (together, the “Existing B Plant”);

  • the development, financing, procurement, construction, ownership, operation and maintenance of a new power and desalination plant (the “New B Extension”);

  • the integration of the New B Extension(NBE) with the Existing B Plant to create a new combined plant (the “New B Plant”); and

  • the development, construction and financing of a new 400 kV grid station, a new town water pumping station, the acquisition of certain share capital of the Taweelah shared facilities company and the operation and maintenance of the existing and certain new shared facilities for the whole of the Taweelah Complex.

Upon the achievement of Project Commercial Operation Date (PCOD) on October 30th 2009, the combined size of the existing acquired plant and the NBE is:

  • the Existing B Plant consists of the Taweelah B power and desalination plant (the “Initial B Plant”) and the Taweelah B power and desalination plant extension (the “Initial B Extension”), with a total net power and water capacity of approximately 1075 MW net and 95 MIGD, respectively; and

  • the New B Extension is added approximately 1,000 MW and 68 MIGD of net power and net water capacity, respectively.

Since October 30th 2009, the combined plant has provided a Contracted Power Capacity of 2,000 MW and contracted water capacity of 160 MIGD. The entire electrical and desalination capacity and output of the New B Plant will be sold on a long term basis to the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (ADWEC) – the “Procurer”, which is a 100% subsidiary of ADWEA, under the Power and Water Purchase Agreement (PWPA).
